Showing up for the other 50%

June 21, 2009

I heard this on a video of the Vital Voices’ Global Leadership Awards:

“Women constitute 50% of society, but please, we should not forget that they raised the other 50%.” - Shaika Lubna Al-Qassimi, the first woman Cabinet Minister of the United Arab Emirates

After I finished laughing, I realized the huge impact we have on the next generation by who we are as women today.

On this Father’s Day where we celebrate the good men in our lives, I want to ask, how am I and how are we as women showing up for the other 50%?

What will my nephews know about women from the way I love them and from who I am in their presence and in the world?  What will your colleagues know about women from the way you lead a Board Meeting or manage your staff?

How do we show up for our boyfriends and husbands in love one minute and in a fight over his socks on the floor the next? What will all of those not-quite-right dates remember from the way we said goodbye?

What do I show my father about the woman I’ve become when he still remembers a 6-year-old needing his hug and a 16-year-old needing (but not quite wanting) his loving guidance?

I think it is worth exploring and practicing how we want to show up for this other 50% whom we love, lead, follow, learn from, partner with, raise, give to and send on their way.

For ourselves and for others, this is what we help each other do in the Women’s Circle.

Move away from the desk

June 18, 2009

I heard this quote today on a recording from the Skoll World Forum 2009:

Nobody’s ever led a revolution from behind a desk.” - John Wood of Room to Read

I’ve been so inspired (and now a bit scared) this week by what’s happening in Iran. I need to move away from my desk.

Playing for Change

I love the Playing For Change projects – creating peace through music. Listening to one of these instantly opens my heart, brings tears to my eyes, and brightens my day. I hope you enjoy…

My 12-year-old Guru

My niece Libby is my guru. Once again this week, she’s come out with a nugget of wisdom that belies her 12 years.

While donning a blue polka dotted skirt and fuchsia flats for her first school dance she said, “lots of people will probably just be wearing shorts, but that’s ok, I will look good and I’m in Libby’s world which is a good place . . .”

I was blown away. At an age when most girls’ self esteem is starting to plummet, I am so proud that sweet Lib is confident, spunky, and loves her own world! Hallelujah!

It made me wonder, “What is Eleanor’s world and is it a good place?” Because of Libby’s example, I’m going to make damn sure it is!

What is your world? The place you live within yourself – is it good? What would make it so? What would allow you to feel, “Yes, I’m here and I am lovin’ my fine self!”

I invite you to come to the Women’s Circle to explore it. Come to feel your value and source your confidence from the deepest part of you. (instead of what the kids at the 6th grade dance think about you!) Come to open your heart through your amazing ride of a life. Come to receive support as you create a nurturing world inside yourself.

What are your NEXT STEPS?

June 8, 2009

I’m super excited to announce I’ll be co-facilitating NEXT STEPS, a four-week program for people who have lost their jobs, with the super-fun (and all around great guy) John Sarvay of Floricane.

NEXT STEPS encourages job seekers to take a step back and align their career search with their personal values and vision, and their experiences, skills and competencies – before they take the “next step forward” in their career. Click here for the full scoop on the program starting June 15th!

I’m excited to be in the process with the participants of NEXT STEPS. My position with Girls For A Change was cut to half time in January. I got the news three weeks after my Dad died and four days before breaking up with my then-boyfriend. (Happy New Year!) Though somewhat in shock, I had to believe that it was the Universe at work. I felt sure that I was being given a big fat push and a wide-open space to explore and pursue what I’m really meant to contribute to this world.

Even with this faith, I know well the terror of facing a huge and unexpected unknown, the excitment of letting secret dreams come to light, and the daily risktaking, failing and getting back up again… all the while trying to pay the bills!

Five years ago I created a 10-page (typed!) list of what I wanted in my career which helped me find my dream job working in girl empowerment. This time around, I still have the same passion yet the form is changing and my yearning is simpler: I want to be well used (my whole being) and to give the gifts I am here to give. The trick is remaining open to it manifesting in unexpected ways. We’ll see! It’s quite fun at the moment!

Click here if you or someone you know (and love!) is interested in joining the NEXT STEPS program starting next Monday, June 15th!
